Saeyoung and I should perhaps consider competitive eating as a plan B...

chicken nachos and mixed seafood ceviche
mahi mahi salad
blackened swordfish nachos
lobster taco, fish taco
done and done

saeyoung and eli

There's just no excuse for the quantities of food saeyoung and I eat when we're together. It's pretty disgraceful actually.

We went to Taco Loco with Eli for dinner today and while Eli ordered like a normal human being and had one tofu mushroom burger, Saeyoung and I thought we'd share a sampling of more or less the entire menu. Between the two of us we ordered a mahi mahi salad, mixed seafood ceviche, a lobster taco, a fish taco, blackened swordfish nachos, and chicken nachos. Right, one type of nachos was not enough for us. We basically ordered a meal for 4-5 people for the two of us.

...and we cleaned house. We ate everything.
But wait, let's put this into context. This is after having an enormous Chinese dim sum brunch a mere 4 hours prior. And after having snacked on sour patch kids and gummy worms at the movie theater. Also there was a popsicle and fruit somewhere in there.

Here's the truly disgusting part: right after Taco Loco, we walked down the street and had a white chocolate covered caramel apple.

No wait, there's more. There is talk of frozen yogurt later...

Ensenada's Best Fish Tacos

I'm curious about places that claim to be "the best".  What does this mean?  I'm am naturally suspicious and generally avoid "bests".  Saeyoung and I had been craving fish tacos and for whatever reason we decided to take up Ensenada's Best Fish Tacos claim to bestness.
The menu is very straightforward.  Fish Taco: $1.  Shrimp Taco $2.  Drinks: $1.  We had one of each. I liked that the fish wasn't coated in some oil soaked inch thick batter.  Very lightly fried actually.  I can appreciate that.  Their salsa bar is also impressive.

Best?  I don't know.  But delicious?  Quite.

Taco Loco

blackened fish taco and mushroom taco

fish taco
ceviche

A wonderful thing about being in Orange County is getting to see Grace as often as I'd like.  We run our pointless errands together, which I consider to be a good measure of an excellent friendship.
Today, Gracie and I went to Taco Loco in Laguna Beach because the beach seemed like a lovely place today and I've been very excited about dining outdoors lately.
Taco Loco is perhaps a little on the expensive side for what is basically a glorified taco stand but the fish is always fresh and they have many tempting vegetarian options.  I always order their ceviche--it's practically creamy, which i know sounds really gross for a ceviche but somehow it works.  I'm pretty sure the creaminess comes from a avocados.  Does that make it seem less gross?  Well, it's not gross.  It's pretty great actually.

Cantina Mayahuel

yucatan seafood stew
vegetarian alegria bowl

guac, salsa, serranos, and chips

This weekend I went down to San Diego to see my friends Felipe and Christina who have recently moved into their first apartment together.  It's been ages since I've been to Cantina Mayahuel and going back makes me nostalgic for the days of Wilson Ave (hi prayer, nancy, albert, joseph).  Unfortunately their chicken mole (possibly the best mole I've ever had) was not available that day but I ordered the Saturday special-Yucatan seafood stew.  The stew was made up mostly of shrimp and scallops over rice and beans in a light broth.  When I think of stew, I think of something thick and chunky but this was quite light.  I like.  Still, I think I would have preferred the mole.

Korean BBQ Tacos And Stir Fried Seafood Udon

In celebration of the "blended" union of my mom (korean) and her husband (mexican/irish), I made them a dinner representative of their marriage!  I read about a taco truck in LA that sell Korean BBQ tacos.  Sounds simple enough.  In place of carne asada, I used Korean short ribs and added cilantro, raw onions, grilled onions, avocado and a little lime.    Because the meal was in great need of a starch, I also made a stir fry of seafood and udon noodles.  The last time I ate at Les Figues headquarters, Vanessa made pasta with sliced almonds and so I stole her idea and added almonds to the stir fry--I think they greatly improved the dish.

Vegetarian Fajitas

This is pretty much an attempt to utilize all the leftovers in my refrigerator. I used basmati rice, but it still worked.

Malo

I want to like Malo, I really do.  But I think it's just overpriced.  The burnt habanero and creme salsa and their white sangria are excellent though.
